What’s the best way to get somewhere, walking or bicycling?

Liz B asked:

I want to be burning major calories before I even get there! I’m overweight & I’m trying really hard to get back in shape. Most places I’d go would be about two miles away, so I don’t want to jog/run because I’d be too tired & sweaty when I get there. I could walk at a fast pace or bicycle. I know bicycling would take a lot less time, but time isn’t the issue, it’s which one would burn the most calories/fat.

Thanks :]

walking will burn 100-110 calories per mile, depending on your weight and how fast you get your heart rate going

biking will burn 20-30 calories per mile

Go with walking, but mixing things up make it less boring.

Just from my experience on a treadmill and bicycle and watching the little calorie counter thing, I believe that the walking would you get you there with burning more calories because you are supporting your own weight. However, the bike does have added benefits. It would get you there quicker and the breeze might be nice in your face. If you live in an area with no breeze, you are going to get there very hot and sweaty just walking. Be sure to take water with you on your journeys. You burn more calories being hydrated than if you become dehydrated. Good luck on your new lifestyle!

Walking is the best solution, buy a pedometer…you should walk 10,000 steps a day. Goog Luck!

For that purpose, walking would be best.
